TRIBE - Laboratory of Robotics and IoT for Smart Precision Agriculture and Forestry
About
Robotics and IoT for Smart Precision Agriculture and Forestry.
The TRIBE LAB provides Research and Development (R&D) services for the creation of advanced technological solutions in robotics, automation, and IoT, specifically targeting the challenges of precision agriculture and forestry.
Through a collaborative and user-centred approach, TRIBE LAB co-develops technologies tailored to real-world operational contexts—from rapid prototyping to validation in real environments—ensuring applicability, efficiency, and direct impact.
Location: FEUP Campus.
Where we act
We develop robotics and IoT solutions that enhance the precision, profitability, and level of automation in agricultural and forestry operations. We put technology at the service of efficient resource management, promoting both environmental and economic sustainability.
TRIBE LAB operates across four strategic contexts:
- Permanent crops, with a particular focus on mountain vineyards, olive groves, and orchards;
- Biomass collection and forest planting, investing in modular, intelligent, and safe mechanisation for demanding forestry environments;
- Protected crops, including conventional greenhouses and Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) in urban settings, fostering local food production with efficient use of resources;
- Dual-use technology (civil and defence), developing platforms and sensors applicable to multiple operational contexts.
What we offer
TRIBE LAB is made up of a multidisciplinary R&D team with over 10 years of experience, and we offer:

Advanced prototyping (from TRL 0 to 9)

Consultancy services for technology adopters and end-users
Equipments
We operate with a flexible dynamic, focused on research and the development of cutting-edge physical prototypes. To this end, we provide:

GPU servers
Mechanical tool for fast prototyping, such 3D printing machines, CNC and milling machinery

Advanced soldering equipment
Demonstrations
TRIBE LAB has two demonstrators aligned with its main areas of activity:

GreenTRIBE, a phenotyping greenhouse equipped with sensors and robots for validating sensing and robotic technologies in real-world conditions and for developing digital plant models

Experimental vineyard established in collaboration with Sogrape, at Quinta do Seixo. In this vineyard, we carry out regular testing and demonstrations of robotic and IoT solutions
Prototypes
We have the capacity to rapidly create prototypes that respond to the emerging needs of different sectors and are aligned with societal challenges.
