About
TEC4AGRO-FOOD is INESC TEC’s initiative for the Agri-food and Forestry sectors. Our mission is to co-create the digital (r)evolution in Agri-food and Forestry through research and technological development in digital technologies and robotics.
Challenges
We contribute to the sustainable development of the agri-food and forestry sectors by promoting the digital and climate/energy transitions through the co-creation of solutions to key challenges such as the need to increase production, ensure food and nutritional security, address labour shortages, protect the environment, tackle climate change, pests and diseases, safeguard natural resources and biodiversity, and promote more efficient and effective use of production factors, as well as circular economy and bioeconomy practices.
Value Proposition
Our main areas of application are precision agriculture and forestry (“right time, right treatment, right amount, right place”), smart (digital) farming, food security, and bioeconomy. We operate across all stages of the smart precision agriculture/forestry cycle—from measuring variability to acting with Variable Rate Technologies (VRT)—including data analysis, decision-making, and prescription mapping.

Technologies

SpecTOM
SpecTOM is a non-invasive spectral 3D reconstruction system that can analyze the internal structures and chemical compositions of fruits.

Water Percept
The Water Percept system consists of a receiver and an emitter and uses radio frequency attenuation for measuring the water content present in vegetation.

BB-Spectral
BB-SPECTRAL is an artificial intelligence (AI) technology for quantify and categorized chemical compounds using spectral information of highly complex samples (e.g. blood).
Projects
Research Infrastructures

x-Energy - Smart Grids and Electric Vehicles Laboratory
At the X-Energy Lab, we aim to test and validate innovative solutions for the decarbonisation of the economy, focusing on their integration into power grids and on smart grids, electric mobility, and active consumption management. At the same time, X-Energy serves as a hub for collaboration and education, welcoming external researchers and promoting knowledge dissemination through publications and the sharing of open data and code. Location: INESC TEC headquarters.
CommsLab - Communications Laboratory
We focus on disseminating large volumes of data, securely and rapidly. At CommsLab, we explore advanced mobile communication technologies across optics, electronics, and radio. We research, prototype, and test 5G, 6G, and Wi-Fi solutions to connect people, machines, and devices in an efficient, reliable, and intelligent way, ensuring that information sharing between these agents keeps up with the digital transformation. Location: INESC TEC headquarters
TRIBE - Laboratory of Robotics and IoT for Smart Precision Agriculture and Forestry
The TRIBE LAB provides Research and Development (R&D) services for the creation of advanced technological solutions in robotics, automation, and IoT, specifically targeting the challenges of precision agriculture and forestry. Through a collaborative and user-centred approach, TRIBE LAB co-develops technologies tailored to real-world operational contexts—from rapid prototyping to validation in real environments—ensuring applicability, efficiency, and direct impact. Location: FEUP Campus.

MASSIVE
MASSIVE (Multimodal Acknowledgeable multiSenSory Immersive Virtual Environments) is an INESC TEC research infrastructure dedicated to research and development of multisensory virtual reality and immersive experiences. Focused on the relationship between technology and human performance, it fosters scientific and technological innovation, advanced training, and interdisciplinary collaboration, contributing to knowledge advancement and the creation of solutions with positive social impact. Location: INESC TEC site at Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD).
