CommsLab - Communications Laboratory
About
Research, prototype and test next-generation communication solutions
We focus on disseminating large volumes of data, securely and rapidly. At CommsLab, we explore advanced mobile communication technologies across optics, electronics, and radio. We research, prototype, and test 5G, 6G, and Wi-Fi solutions to connect people, machines, and devices in an efficient, reliable, and intelligent way, ensuring that information sharing between these agents keeps up with the digital transformation.
Location: INESC TEC headquarters
Where we act
Mobile communications cover a wide range of sectors, e.g., telecommunications, defence, environment, energy, industry, and transport. Technological progress in these areas depends on robust, adaptable, and intelligent connectivity. At CommsLab, we act as a bridge between research and real-world application, testing solutions that enable connections between all stakeholders to meet the needs of digital transformation. We contribute to the development of more effective communication systems, capable of addressing the emerging challenges of an increasingly interconnected world.
What we offer
Supported by state-of-the-art infrastructures, our Communications Laboratory provides unique conditions for research and testing in mobile communications, electronics, and sensing technologies. Researchers have access to equipment for testing, simulating, and collecting data from technologies under development in the fields of optics, electronics, and radio.
Optical and electronic testing resources for research in electronics and microelectronics

Optical and radio communications, featuring an anechoic chamber for precise antenna characterisation up to 170 GHz
Support for research in 5G and 6G technologies, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, and human sensing
Equipments
We combine sensors, antennas, electronics, optics, and edge computing, and our laboratory infrastructures also provide:

Anechoic chambers (echo-free): specially designed spaces to minimise or eliminate reflections of sound and electromagnetic waves; the laboratory is equipped with two rooms with capacity up to 170 GHz
Bonding Machine TPT HB-10
Infiniium High Performance Oscilloscope, Agilent 90604A, 6 GHz, 40 GSa/s
Prototypes
Our dedication to the field of Telecommunications and Multimedia has significantly contributed to advancements in the sector, presenting innovative and impactful solutions.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) prototype at 6.5 GHz: For human activity sensing in indoor scenarios

Mobile 5G cell prototype with object-aware xApp: Supports predictive LoS blockage detection and proactive mitigation (e.g. positioning, RIS config, handovers)

Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) prototype (FR1): Enables experimental validation across research and academic activities
