Aerospace, Security and Defence

About

We contribute to the Aerospace, Security and Defence sectors, advancing a strategic vision focused on technological autonomy, European integration and the development of a competitive and sustainable national ecosystem.

Challenges

The Aerospace, Security and Defence sectors are experiencing significant growth, driven by increasing air traffic, the need for greater sustainability, and the rapid evolution of New Space initiatives. This international momentum is unfolding within a context of complex global security and heightened geopolitical instability. This expansion brings substantial challenges: intensified global competition, demanding certification and regulatory frameworks, the need for technological sovereignty in Europe, and pressure to develop disruptive yet economically efficient solutions. In Portugal, the rapid development of the aeronautical industry and the expansion of space activities require a robust and competitive national ecosystem. In Security and Defence, emerging threats and new procurement programmes reinforce the need for innovation, integration and strategic coordination.

Value Proposition

We bring together multidisciplinary technological expertise in areas such as robotics, telecommunications, photonics, energy, artificial intelligence, computer vision and computer science to develop new technologies for the Aerospace, Security and Defence sectors. Actively involved in strategic national and European networks, namely EASTRO (European Association of Space Technology Research Organisations), EARTO (Security and Defence Working Group) and the Portuguese AED Cluster, TEC4ASD leverages access to funding programmes, industrial ecosystems and decision-making forums to anticipate sector priorities and structure competitive consortia.

TRIBE - Laboratory of Robotics and IoT for Smart Precision Agriculture and Forestry
TRIBE - Laboratory of Robotics and IoT for Smart Precision Agriculture and Forestry

The TRIBE LAB provides Research and Development (R&D) services for the creation of advanced technological solutions in robotics, automation, and IoT, specifically targeting the challenges of precision agriculture and forestry. Through a collaborative and user-centred approach, TRIBE LAB co-develops technologies tailored to real-world operational contexts—from rapid prototyping to validation in real environments—ensuring applicability, efficiency, and direct impact. Location: FEUP Campus.

iiLab - Industry and Innovation Lab
iiLab - Industry and Innovation Lab

We support the growth and innovation of organisations, companies, and other groups by promoting advanced production technologies and supporting the development of specialised skills. Our goal is to be the preferred partner of the industry for development and innovation in digital transformation. To achieve this mission, our work focuses on demonstrating research results, experimentation, and advanced training, involving various areas, e.g., robotics, Internet of Things, data management, and information systems. Location: PORTIC, Porto.

CommsLab - Communications Laboratory
CommsLab - Communications Laboratory

We focus on disseminating large volumes of data, securely and rapidly. At CommsLab, we explore advanced mobile communication technologies across optics, electronics, and radio. We research, prototype, and test 5G, 6G, and Wi-Fi solutions to connect people, machines, and devices in an efficient, reliable, and intelligent way, ensuring that information sharing between these agents keeps up with the digital transformation. Location: INESC TEC headquarters

Robotics Lab - Robotics and Autonomous Systems Laboratory
Robotics Lab - Robotics and Autonomous Systems Laboratory

We develop robots and autonomous systems for extreme environments, from the deep sea to flooded mines. Our solutions collect data, build maps, and carry out inspection and surveillance operations with precision, contributing to scientific, industrial, and environmental monitoring missions. Location: Porto School of Engineering (ISEP) and Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP).

MASSIVE
MASSIVE

MASSIVE (Multimodal Acknowledgeable multiSenSory Immersive Virtual Environments) is an INESC TEC research infrastructure dedicated to research and development of multisensory virtual reality and immersive experiences. Focused on the relationship between technology and human performance, it fosters scientific and technological innovation, advanced training, and interdisciplinary collaboration, contributing to knowledge advancement and the creation of solutions with positive social impact. Location: INESC TEC site at Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD).

Photonics Lab
Photonics Lab

Our laboratory explores non-traditional microfabrication techniques, based on femtosecond laser direct writing processes, constantly striving to implement the latest and most innovative procedures. Extensive experience in the design and production of microscale sensors endows our researchers with unique and transversal skills, making this laboratory a reference in its field. Location: FCUP.
