About the Project

Think big on small frontier towns: Alto Alentejo and Alta Extremadura leonesa (13th - 16th centuries)

The Frontowns project studies the small border towns between the Portuguese Alto Alentejo and the Leonese Alta Extremadura in the 13th to 16th centuries. The aim is to identify the role of these towns in the articulation of a border territory and in the relation with more distant spaces, exploring the links and flows that are established among them. The project also intends to reconstruct and study the evolution of the urban space of two of these towns, Castelo de Vide and Cáceres, using 3D modelling and animation. The project team is composed of experts from various fields, such as history, archaeology, art history, urbanism, and mathematical modelling. The project is funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and has a duration of three and a half years, from 2021 to 2025. The project has an official website (https://frontowns.fcsh.unl.pt/), where one can find more information about the objectives, the team, the activities and the results of the project.
