Ricardo Daniel Pereira

I was born on April 24th of 1994 in Porto, where I still live nowadays.In 2012, I've joined the Bachelor's degree in Electronics and Computers Engineering at ISEP, having concluded it 3 years later.

After the Bachelor, in 2015, I started my Master's degree on Autonomous Systems, at the Autonomous Systems Laboratory (ISEP), where I got the interest in becoming a researcher.Since January 2016, I'm a researcher at INESC TEC and I'm being working with underwater robots.

HiperSea

Deep sea research, due to the harsh environment, has been barely explored although contains a huge potential of economic exploitation of bio-resources due to the organisms and substances that can be found in these regions. The substances contained or produced by deep-sea organisms have interest due to the potential application in pharmaceutical and food industry. In spite of the great potential, it had been scarcely explored due to the high costs of production. The project herein presented aims to develop an isobaric mobile infrastructure able to collect deepsea live organisms under conditions of high pressure, low temperature (or extremely high in the case of proximity to active volcanoes) and low luminosity. This mobile structure shall be able to transfer the living organisms to another chamber, mimicking at surface (1bar), the environment of the sea floor without modification of the relevant physical parameters. The system will also allow the maintenance of these organisms in controlled and easily accessible environments for scientific research purposes and to allow the use of the substances produced by them for the pharmaceutical industry.

Robotics and Autonomous Systems

The Centre for Robotics and Autonomous Systems (CRAS) focuses on developing innovative robotic solutions for operation in complex environments. Each day, our researchers strive to map the unknown, creating solutions to explore the oceans’ depths, monitor the environment, or inspect infrastructures. Our goal? To become a global reference in robotics and autonomous systems, combining expertise in multisensory perception and 3D modelling, navigation and control, robotic manipulation and intervention - pushing the boundaries of autonomous robotics and integrating aerial, ground, and underwater robots into our solutions. Focusing on Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) between 5 and 8, CRAS develops prototypes and operational solutions for strategic sectors. Our laboratory infrastructure includes test tanks, prototyping workshops, and a wide range of equipment ready to operate in real-world environments. Our researchers also resort to Mar Profundo, a support vessel for testing and validating innovative maritime technologies - a key asset in bridging theoretical design and field validation. CRAS stands out for a practical approach: we combine advanced research with a strong focus on real-world applications, reducing human risk in hazardous missions, optimising operations and processes, and expanding the frontiers of autonomous robotics.
