About
We are focused on developing next-generation communication systems that are highly configurable, virtualised, and integrated with sensing capabilities, to meet the digitalisation needs of various economic sectors. We bring together institutions, companies, and associations - particularly communication and sensing system manufacturers, communication service providers, and policymakers - to define high value-added solutions for both the economy and society. Our innovation activities will be supported by the new Communications and Machine Perception Laboratory, to be established in Matosinhos. This laboratory will benefit from an ecosystem featuring experimental zones and dedicated spaces for the establishment of companies and new business ventures.
Challenges
The digitalisation of the economy has demanded the development of advanced communication networks, services, and applications. The next generation of communication systems will be highly configurable and adaptable to customer needs, increasingly virtualised, and capable of also delivering sensing services. Developing systems of such complexity requires multidisciplinary expertise - one of the institute’s key strengths. INESC TEC can support the digitalisation process by offering its partners decades of knowledge and experience in areas such as microelectronics, photonics, energy, robotics, artificial intelligence, computing, and business models.

Technologies

IA-TPC
This transmission power control system is capable of dynamically selecting optimal transmission power for the nodes in wireless network considering its surrounding interference.

CDR Sensing
CRD Sensing enables remote sensing using commercial equipment such as the Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR), further enabling a more efficient, compact and easy handling sensing system.

CHARD
CHARD is a software that automatically restructures code, transforming C code into a dataflow graph (DFG) and applies graph optimizations to generate C code with high-level synthesis (HLS) directives for FPGA-based hardware accelerators.
