BRAIN Lab - Neuro-Engineering Lab
About
R&D biomedical engineering R&D in different domains, focusing on neurosciences and neurological diseases
Our work covers different areas, like biomedical and electronic engineering, physics, and computing, and stands out for focusing on the study of major neurological disorders, namely Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, autism, and epilepsy. We develop innovative technologies to support healthcare professionals and patients, with impact across diagnosis, early detection, prevention, non-invasive treatments, monitoring, and surgical interventions
Location: INESC TEC.
Where we act
We focus on healthcare - particularly medicine -, addressing brain and nervous system domains. Medical specialities like neurology, neurosurgery, and neuroradiology lead the scope of our research - which, through innovative results, aims to influence other sectors relevant to societal well-being, e.g., education, social services, and the environment.
What we offer
Our laboratory develops technological solutions with market transfer potential, with an infrastructure for research projects that seek to impact the following areas

Brain and cardiovascular imaging and signals

Artificial Intelligence and human-machine interaction

Multimodal computer vision analysis for neurological diseases

Neurosurgical assistance systems

Wearable platforms for continuous monitoring of neurological and cardiovascular disease symptoms

Bio(neuro)sensors
Equipments
Our set of resources in the field of neuroengineering enables high-level research and facilitates the transfer of technologies to the market.
Stim-BRAIN Lab: a facility that supports brain imaging, equipped with an fMRI simulator
64-channel Micromed video-electroencephalogram (EEG) medical systems

Wearable devices for monitoring EEG, ECG, and other human variables (e.g., movement)
Demonstrations
We provide scientific services to external entities, beyond those involved in our research projects. Our demonstrators favour a practical view of the technologies we develop.

Wearable devices for very long-term EEG, ECG, and other exams
MRI/fMRI simulator for the development of neurocognitive stimulation paradigms

Studies of psycho-physiological changes in professional environments (e.g. high-risk professionals like firefighters, police officers, isolated or high-altitude workers, etc.)
Prototypes
Our neuroengineering and advanced human sensing laboratory develops prototypes based on needs identified within the biomedical sector.
