CLOUDinha Laboratory
About

Computational infrastructure that supports R&D in computing sciences

This lab supports INESC TEC and University of Minho R&D activities, providing bare metal, virtualisation and security services, as well as emerging storage and network technologies. The increasing number of researchers who resort to these resources to improve their work demonstrates the lab’s relevance, whose implementation and expansion efforts have been crucial to the academic community.

Location: University of Minho

Where we act

Advanced computing plays a central role in several sectors, including healthcare, industry, education, transportation, Artificial Intelligence, and cybersecurity. The current digital transformation presents new challenges for research and innovation, requiring robust and adaptable technological infrastructures. In this sense, the laboratory has been vital in developing technologies that meet said demands, supporting research across multiple areas of computer science: distributed and operating systems; storage systems and databases; privacy and security; blockchain, Internet of Things, and data spaces; bioinformatics; and sustainable computing.

What we offer
Our laboratory provides services for computer science R&D activities, including:
Bare-metal and virtual environments
Emerging technologies like GPUs
Persistent memory
High-assurance hardware
Programmable network interface controllers
Equipments

The computational support allowed researchers to achieve excellence in their academic work, with our resources enabling thousands of hours of computing tasks. Currently, the laboratory includes:

106 commodity x86 servers, featuring Intel Core i3, i5, and i9 CPUs, 16 GB of memory, and both SSD and HDD storage.
Programmable Intel and Netronome network interface cards, with bandwidths ranging from 1 Gib to 10 Gib.
A rack containing 4 servers with Intel Xeon processors (ranging from 36 to 48 cores), 192 GB of memory, and a tiered storage hierarchy including persistent memory, NVMe, and SSDs.
