Business Experiments in Cyber Physical Production Systems

The goal of project BEinCPPS is to integrate and experiment an Fl-based machine-factory—cloud service platform, intensively in ﬁve selected S3 Vanguard regions in a first stage, and afterwards extensively in all European regions, by involving local competence centres and manufacturing SMEs. The ﬁnal aim of this project is to dramatically improve the adoption of CPPSs all over Europe by creating, nurturing and promoting CPS-driven regional innovation ecosystems, made of competence centres, manufacturing enterprises and IT SMEs.

Team Leaders

I am a senior researcher with a degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Porto, Portugal (option of Digital and Computer Systems). Since 1996, I am responsible for Research and Technological Development projects in the Centre for Enterprise Systems Engineering (CESE) at INESC TE. Information Systems, Operations Management, Decision Support and Enterprise Collaborative Networks are my main areas of work. In this context, I have participated in national and European projects of applied research in close collaboration with other research institutions, technology centres, companies of the ICT sector and industrial companies from various sectors, among which stand out the textile, clothing and footwear sectors and the automotive industry. The following is a sample of European projects I was engaged with: AC/DC “Automotive Chassis Development for 5-Days-Cars”, eBiz-TCF “Harmonising e-Business processes and data exchanges for SMEs in the textile/clothing and footwear sectors in the Single Market”, STAMINA “Sustainable and reliable robotics for part handling in manufacturing automation”. Besides software-based prototypes, I published several articles in scientific journals, conference proceedings and book chapters.

Enterprise Systems Engineering

The research carried out at the Centre for Enterprise Systems Engineering (CESE) has a direct impact on industrial transformation, developing sustainable, resilient, and human-centred solutions to address the challenges of the digital and green transitions. Through a co-creation and development approach with scientific and industrial partners, CESE contributes to improve organisational capabilities and driving systemic innovation in complex industrial contexts. As a multidisciplinary research centre, CESE bridges science and practice in the field of Systems Engineering, focusing on value creation within industrial ecosystems. This mission is structured around five research lines that define CESE scientific and technological expertise: Manufacturing Systems Design and Management, Supply Chain and Collaborative Networks Management, Architectures and Industrial Information Systems, Technology Management in Industry, Transportation and Logistics.
