Maria Cristina de Carvalho Alves Ribeiro

I am an Associate Professor with the Department of Informatics Engineering of FEUP, University of Porto, and a senior researcher at INESC TEC. I have collaborated on and been in charge of projects in the areas of cultural heritage, multimedia databases, information retrieval and combinatorial optimisation. I have supervised 9 PhD and 33 MSc dissertations. I was the technical leader of the SAPO/U.Porto extension laboratory for 5 years. My teaching activities include courses in the Informatics Engineering and Information Science programmes. Research Data Management is the core of my current research activity. I am the PI of TAIL (FCT/POCI), on research data management workflows for data publication, and I lead the [email protected] pilot in the EUDAT european initiative. I am a member of the Working Group for the National Policy on Open Science with SECTES. My research interests include information retrieval, digital preservation and knowledge representation.

DBPreserve

The project explores the application of DW technology to the preservation of complex electronic records. In more detail, the project will study: - properties that the DW must possess, according to the standards already established (like the Open Archives Initiative); - rules of transformation from operational systems into DW, adopting a process-centric but integrated view, which guarantees those properties; - a XML version of the DW, though the DW model is already very simple and thus fulfills the requirement of platform independence required by long-term preservation; - metadata needs, beyond the data in the operational database, to preserve the meaning of the processes, most often just implicit in the data but present in organizational procedures and in software development documentation; - application to the human resources system of a concrete institution, now undergoing an important reorganization; - assessment of the results obtained with the help of external experts.

Human-Centered Computing and Information Science

The Centre for Human-Centered Computing and Information Science (HumanISE) brings together engineers, scientists, and designers with expertise in Human-Centred Computing (HCC), Computer Science (CS), and Information Science (IS). Interdisciplinarity, one of the Centre’s defining features, fosters the development of software systems, methods, and tools designed to empower individuals and their communities. The excellence and impact of HumanISE’s research, innovation, and consultancy activities allow addressing increasingly complex, volatile, heterogeneous, ambiguous, and uncertain challenges, while ensuring compliance with legal, ethical, and organisational standards and frameworks. Value transfer is achieved through close collaboration with academia and industry partners. HumanISE’s core research areas include Human-Computer Interaction; Computer Graphics and Interactive Digital Media; Information Management and Information Systems; Software Engineering; and Large-Scale and Special-Purpose Computing Systems, Languages, and Tools; as well as Computing for Embedded and Cyber-Physical Systems.
